Editing Styles

• COPY EDIT

A copy edit will comb your manuscript, word-for-word, to fix all grammar, punctuation, and spelling in accordance with whichever style guide your manuscript adheres to (i.e., The Chicago Manual of Style, AP, or MLA). A copy edit will ensure your book is technically perfect from start to finish without a single grammatical error.

• LINE EDIT

A line edit examines each individual sentence to ensure it’s written in a compelling, smooth, and well-worded manner, while also staying true to the author’s voice. This type of edit will not only point out which sentences aren’t flowing quite right, but will also offer detailed suggestions on how to revise them and improve your knowledge and skill as a writer.

• DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT

Developmental edits represent our most in-depth style of edit and focus on fixing your overall story. This edit will offer detailed suggestions and revisions for improving things like plot (including individual points, full story, and overarching), character development, pacing, transitions between scenes and chapters, humor, voice, and dialogue. While copy edits and line edits are what help make a book readable, a developmental edit is what will make a book sell-able. Let our experienced team of editors make your manuscript the best it can possibly be!

• PROOFREAD

A proofread is for manuscripts that have already been professionally edited and merely need a second set of eyes before publication. We put the final polish on your masterpiece.

The WMW Editing Process

Step 1

Your editor does an initial read-through while doing copy and line edits. During this step, they will also begin leaving developmental note markers.

Step 2

Your editor starts the book all over and, with full knowledge of your book, hashes out developmental edits identified in the first read-through. They’ll also locate and fix anything they missed in the first go around.

Step 3

Your manuscript is passed to a reviewing editor. Their job is to also read your manuscript from cover to cover to ensure every important detail has been attended to before your book is returned.

Step 4

This is your step! Your manuscript is returned to you. Along with your manuscript, you will get a letter from your editor and a word document with suggested rewrites and developmental notes.

Step 5

If you decided to go with our Ultimate Edit Package, once you’ve finished making edits to your manuscript, you’ll return it to us for a final proofread. Your editor and a reviewing editor will each comb through your manuscript one more time to make sure it’s in tip-top shape.

*Developmental edits are only included in our Premium and Ultimate packages. If you choose the Basic package, you will not receive developmental advice or notation.
